Daniel Thomas Hollnsteiner Memorial Fund

The Daniel Thomas Hollnsteiner Memorial Fund, established in 2015, pays tribute to the memory of Daniel Hollnsteiner. Twenty-one year old Daniel was kayaking with two friends in New Zealand when strong winds and waves capsized their kayaks. All three waited desperately to be rescued while clinging on to their swamped kayaks . One of them, a non-swimmer, urged Daniel to save himself by swimming to an island in the distance. Although Daniel was a strong swimmer, he refused to leave his friends behind. They waited together, but Daniel ultimately succumbed to hypothermia. His two friends survived. Daniel gave the most precious gift a person can give to another, his own life.

From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing I do know: that we are here for the sake of each other, above all, for those upon whose smile
and well-being our own happiness depends, and also for the countless unknown souls with whose fate we are connected by a bond of sympathy.
Many times a day I realize how much my own outer and inner life is built upon the labors of others, both living and dead, and how earnestly I must
exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received and am still receiving.”

-Albert Einstein
